Honeybees as active samplers for microplastics

چکیده

Microplastics are ubiquitous and their sampling is a difficult task. Honeybees interact with the environment inside foraging range take pollutants them. In this work, we demonstrated for first time that worker bees can act as active samplers of microplastics. We collected honeybees from apiaries located in centre Copenhagen nearby semiurban rural areas. showed presence microplastics all sampled locations mostly form fragments (52%) fibres (38%) average equivalent diameter 64 ± 39 ?m 234 156 fragments. The highest load corresponded to urban apiaries, but comparable number was found hives suburban areas, which be explained by settlements easy dispersion small wind. Micro-FTIR analysis confirmed thirteen synthetic polymers, most frequently polyester followed polyethylene polyvinyl chloride. Our results attached body opens new research pathway use biosamplers anthropogenic pollution. • First detection Worker Thirteen types polymers abundant Non-significant differences between

Evaluation of Car Air Filters’ Efficiency as Active Samplers for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Heavy Metals

In this study, an innovative and inexpensive approach, based on car engine air filters (CAFs), was used to monitor polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (HMs). CAFs were collected from two taxi garages in Guangzhou and analyzed for PAHs and heavy metals. The total concentrations of eight high molecular weight PAHs (ΣPAHs) ranged from 923 to 11378 μg/CAF. The average ΣPAHs con...

Honey Bees (Apis mellifera, L.) as Active Samplers of Airborne Particulate Matter

Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are bioindicators of environmental pollution levels. During their wide-ranging foraging activity, these hymenopterans are exposed to pollutants, thus becoming a useful tool to trace the environmental contaminants as heavy metals, pesticides, radionuclides and volatile organic compounds. In the present work we demonstrate that bees can also be used as active sample...

Silicone Wristbands as Personal Passive Samplers

Active-sampling approaches are commonly used for personal monitoring, but are limited by energy usage and data that may not represent an individual's exposure or bioavailable concentrations. Current passive techniques often involve extensive preparation, or are developed for only a small number of targeted compounds. In this work, we present a novel application for measuring bioavailable exposu...

Microplastics as contaminants in the marine environment: a review.

Since the mass production of plastics began in the 1940s, microplastic contamination of the marine environment has been a growing problem. Here, a review of the literature has been conducted with the following objectives: (1) to summarise the properties, nomenclature and sources of microplastics; (2) to discuss the routes by which microplastics enter the marine environment; (3) to evaluate the ...

Microplastics in bivalves cultured for human consumption.

Microplastics are present throughout the marine environment and ingestion of these plastic particles (<1 mm) has been demonstrated in a laboratory setting for a wide array of marine organisms. Here, we investigate the presence of microplastics in two species of commercially grown bivalves: Mytilus edulis and Crassostrea gigas. Microplastics were recovered from the soft tissues of both species. ...
